And, in many cases, the juvenile justice system is deeply involved in relationship to the penal system of the nation as it hopes and works towards keeping juveniles from becoming adult criminals and entering the justice system of prisons. The following paper summarizes and examines an article which illustrates ways in which the juvenile justice system is affected by juvenile offenders. The article is "Digging deep to avoid juvenile incarceration" by Philip Comey. Digging Deep The article first presents the truth that adult criminal offenders more often than not begin a criminal career early in their life, in their childhood and youth. They are also more often than not, simply pushed through the system and thus they are very likely to become adult criminals without more attention. This introduction sets the stage for a discussion of one woman, Margaret Barber, in the juvenile justice system that is determined to keep juveniles out of the system, helping them as much as possible, and utilizing incarceration as the very last solution to the problem. Her profession is within the juvenile justice system and her concern for the youth illustrates how juvenile offenders can affect the system itself as adults see needs that should be filled. Barber has been in the justice system for many years and she finally began to realize that many of these youth offenders were just constantly pushed from one position to another, always coming back with problems, and thus never really being aided by the juvenile justice system. She feels that it is the job of the juvenile justice system to prevent these youth from entering into the system of incarceration that will ultimately lead to an adult life of crime.
