In areas of southern Florida, for example, issues related to ethnicity and intercultural conflicts have also influenced the views of social workers in relating to the problem of juvenile delinquency. The current literature, though, reflects a different perspective on the major underlying causes of juvenile delinquency, and relates most of the variables linked to delinquency and criminal behavior to environmental elements, including familial dysfunction and social conflict. Research suggests that the role of parents and the significance of the family setting are both determinants of whether children with turn to juvenile delinquency or not. In considering this position, it is necessary first to assess the views of delinquency and its defining characteristics, and then assess the correlation between familial functioning and the behaviors of children. There are a number of major sociological theories and psychological perspectives, including behaviorism, that can be integrated into an argument of the role that familial functioning plays in childhood behaviors. In addition, this study will also consider the nature of parental supervision in families and specific parental problems, including familial patterns of aggression that are duplicated in the behaviors of youths. Through an analytical assessment of the current literature and an integrated view of the research, it is possible to relate the findings in a manner that supports the belief of the link between familial dysfunction and the onset of child delinquency. Further, this study will also present information regarding resources in southern Florida and the function of social workers in social service agencies dealing with juvenile delinquency.
