is as though we expect reporters to have a similar code of ethics as doctors and we do not expect them to lie to us. We rely on them to give us an unbiased look at the world. Without them we would not know what is going on in the world and so they become incredibly important in how opinions are educated and how the nation sees events in the rest of the world. Unfortunately it seems that there are far more dishonest reporters and journalists out there than may be good for the nation or the world. There are reporters who make facts up, make up sources, make up people who provide quotes, and generally present the public with news that is anything but true. One of the most famous of these sorts of journalists is Stephen Glass. The following paper first examines this untrustworthy journalist and then presents a look at other journalists who have lied to us. Stephen Glass Stephen Glass was 25 years old and was considered a very good reporter at The New Republic. He wrote stories, however, that were made up, people who were made up, and places that were made up (60 Minutes, 2003). "And to back it all up, he created fake notes, fake voicemails, fake faxes, even a fake Web site - whatever it took to deceive his editors, not to mention hundreds of thousands of readers" (60 Minutes, 2003). Interestingly enough, the lying started when he was given a story to write, about some piece of Washington legislation (60 Minutes, 2003).
