story that offers a male perspective on suburban life in the late 1950s and this story demonstrates that Francis Weed, Cheevers protagonist, is just as disillusioned and frustrated with his role as any early womens libber. Weed is awakened to his dissatisfaction through the trauma of a potentially fatal incident when his commuter flight has to make an emergency landing. This conjures memories of World War II for Weed and Cheever uses the World War II motif as a contrast and a metaphor to the placidity of American suburbia. As the passengers from the plane file out into a pasture to await transport to Philadelphia, one person comments, "Its just like the Marne," i.e., a famous area of battlefield in France (Cheever 71). When he returns home, he is greeted by the bickering and squabbling that is typical for siblings. He tries to tell of his brush with death, but no one listens. When his wife tells him to go tell their oldest daughter that supper is ready, it is like getting a reprieve from battle by being sent back to headquarters (Cheever 73). At the supper table, Weed causes as a scene by complaining about being "nearly killed in an airplane crash" and then having "to come home every night to a battlefield" (Cheever 73). Later in the story, at a party, Weed recognizes the maid serving canap?s, as a woman he saw publically humiliated during World War II for fraternizing with the enemy. He does not mention this, however, because of the tacit understanding among his neighbors that "there had been no past, no war-that there was no danger or trouble in the world" (Cheever 76).
