The novel is in epistolary form, i.e., letters from Don Juan, the Bishop of Mexico to the Spanish monarch. The letters are based on the testimony of Mixtli, an elderly Aztec whose varied and well-traveled life makes him a well-qualified informant for the Spanish conquerors as to the society that they have worked so diligently to destroy. Mixtlis account begins with this childhood, as he unabashedly relates the smallest detail of his life to the Spanish friars who are writing down his words. The first half of the novel concerns his early life. This summary of the novel concerns the latter part of his life, which primarily concerns his home life, his duties as an emissary, and what his observations tell the reader about native life prior to the Spanish invasion. Summation This narrative is fascinating because the reader gets such a clear vision of what Mixtlis life. In this part of the novel, he is a successful merchant and happily married to Zyanya. Mixtlis account includes details concerning religion. For example, he records being taken with a statuette of the "Oldest of the Old Gods," which he buys for his home (Jennings 523). He discusses economic factors and how he consolidated his fortune through the buying and selling of "flashes of purple dye" and the skeins of purple yarn that this produced (Jennings 524). The Aztec themselves were conquerors and Mixtli summarizes the political and military environment in which he lived, relating how the conquered people of that region would never again make "another foray outside their jungle" (Jennings 525).
