The nation brought their products to a level of quality that far surpasses many American and European products in the same industry. The fact is that the Japanese excel at quality. This fact has led to volumes written about Japanese management styles. Despite of the volumes written about the Japanese management style, exactly what it is remains open to debate. Worse, the economy condition of the country has led the company to shed some of its historical practices. Consider what is most often mentioned when discussing this topic: emphasizing cooperation over competition, employee participation in decision making processes, teamwork, and life-time employment (WIN Advisory Group, 2007). Life-time employment is no longer a guarantee in Japan. Sada Honda suggests that there are three essential features related to Japanese management: "people orientation; long-term view; and process culture" (WIN Advisory Group, 2007). Sada reported that Japanese executives took the time to meet every American worker in a Japanese firm located in Detroit (WIN Advisory Group, 2007). This type of practice increases a feeling of belonging, which, in turn, leads to higher productivity. Another author, Toyohiro Kono, said that one essential ingredient in Japanese management is respect for people (WIN Advisory Group, 2007). This can be observed through certain personnel practices such as rotating jobs to avoid boredom and routine as well as the practices of having a career ladder program in each company (WIN Advisory Group, 2007). This practices enhanced motivation and morale (WIN Advisory Group, 2007). Japanese leadership focuses on long-term goals, which is reflected in their focus on research and development projects (WIN Advisory Group, 2007).
