The Artist (1836 - 1902) The twenty-year old artist James Joseph Jacques Tissot began his formal academic training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris; there he met Edgar Degas who became a lifetime friend. This "natural" painter did not stay at the school long, and as an artist was more readily influenced by the work of the other avant-garde of Paris including, not only Degas, and Manet, but also Ernest Messonier, Alfred Stevens and American expatriate James Abbott McNeill Whistler. This circle of artistic friends read the work of poet and critic Charles Beaudelaire, and avoided the old visual subjects of history, mythology, and religion in favor of the street scenes and society life of Paris. Whistler introduced Tissot to the "newly discovered" Japanese art prints. From their influence the painter began to experiment with unusual angles and perspectives, broader areas of color, and off-center, or asymmetrical compositions. Add these innovations to the fact that Tissot was a very good detail painter, particularly concerning womens costumes and clothing, and a successful society painter is born. By the end of the 1860s Tissot was enjoying a good reputation and a healthy income in Paris. Although he served in the Franco-Prussian war, he was also accused of being part of the short-lived Paris Commune. Consequently the artist found it wise to exercise discretion, and gave up his Paris career, and moved to London, taking his skills with him. In London he found new patrons for his work and was once more successful, working from the posh city suburb of St. Johns Wood.
