It is his quest to pinpoint the psychological, sociological and environmental reasons for such an exorbitant percentage of violent young people. "My goal is to understand why kids kill and to help other parents and professionals understand so that they can do something to prevent it in the future" (Garbarino PG). One of the most eye-opening attributions that Garbarino makes with regard to youth violence is the overwhelming presence of racial intolerance that continues to permeate society. "Given our societys history of institutional and interpersonal racism, it would be naive to think that poor minority kids automatically get the same attention and concern as white and middle-class kids do" (Garbarino PG). The author contends that due to social and economical class structure, certain segments of society receive scathing judgment upon committing violent crime, whereas other segments are looked upon as being victims themselves of some unfair social problem. Indeed, Garbarino brings forth a critical component in the equation that questions why society is still unable to see beyond its racial intolerance. "When white middle-class kids kill, there is always a public outcry of why and a search for what went wrong, but when inner-city minority kids kill, the public is warned of demons and superpredators....No ones calling these white youths maggots or animals."
