many societal elements. One of the more important of these elements is religion. Another critical separation in terms of architectural evolution is the demarcation between East and West.
Neither religion nor geography, however, stands as an impenetrable line when it comes to architectural evolution. Indeed, styles are often mixed and one building can demonstrate influence of
more than one religion and both the East and the West. There is no better place to start to explore that contention than in Venice.
Islams influence on Venice is apparent in a diversity of ways. This influence extends, in fact, in other western regions as well and impacts political viewpoints
and policy, religion, art, and industry alike. This is not surprising given the rapid swath Islam has made since its inception. The Growth of Islam (2000) emphasizes that
just one year after the Muslim prophet Muhammads death (in AD 632): "Muslims had conquered
half the territory which had belonged to the Christian Roman Empire. Within another 100 years they had entered Central Asia and China".
In "The Venture of Islam: Conscience and History in A World Civilization" Marshal Hodgson (1990) distinguishes between these vastly different cultures in terms
of their geography and diverse cultural interests noting that Occidental peoples were confined to well defined geographic areas and that while:
