United States during the mid 19th century (Krafft 11). The movement of large populations into the colonies in the 19th century created an emerging immigrant population and cities like Boston and Chicago swelled with Irish populations during the 1840s and 1850s. The transformation of regions of these cities into Irish immigrant communities during this time period presented major social, economic and ethnic conflicts. Prejudices against the Irish immigrants created difficulties in terms of employment, and many Irish immigrant communities in cities like Boston were impoverished. Though Irish immigration in the 1840s and 1850s has thought to have been a result of the infamous potato famine and the considerable economic hardship that followed, it has also been suggested that Irish immigration increased as a correlate to increased European immigration as a whole. The mass exodus from Europe to the colonies and to the United States in the 19th century was a result of a number of social factors, but most significantly the increased freedom to immigrate (Palmer and Colton 540). Most of these Irish immigrants in the United States in the mid 19th century were from rural areas and had been members of farming communities. Most had agrarian work histories and little knowledge of other systems of employment. Few had major industrial skills or their own trades outside of agricultural skills, and there was not a system in place that was prepared for the overwhelming influx of unskilled laborers. The city of Boston itself and the social climate within that city created innumerable obstacles for the Irish immigrants.
