India and China as seen through the eyes of these authors. Discussion First, we should talk about the two authors, because they share a sense of cultural displacement. Kingston is a Chinese-American and Lahiri was born of Indian parents in London but brought up in the United States. Many studies have been done on the immigrant experience in America, and the difficulties it presents for people trying to find their way through a new and bewildering culture. They often dont know whether they should honor the customs and traditions of their culture, adopt those of the new country, or blend them in some way. Many end up walking a fine line-neither whole Chinese or Indian, nor wholly American-and this sort of "split" in identity creates a great deal of internal conflict. This schizophrenic approach to identity appears to be common in many immigrants but for some reason the Chinese-American community has been singled out as being the one group that seems to feel this dual identity most keenly. Whether that is true or not is not our concern here, but there does appears to be a great deal of material that suggests a strong pull toward China even among people born in the U.S. Maxine Hong Kingston was born in the U.S.; her parents emigrated from Hong Kong. But even though she is American, the pull of her cultural heritage is strong. However, she chose to explore it through a collection of stories that blend fiction and fact; she "shamelessly intermingles memory, speculation, and projection, reclaiming her aunts forgotten memory and holding her parents, and herself, accountable for suppressing it" (Row). This aunt is the subject of the first story in the book; she disgraced her family by bearing an illegitimate child and ultimately drowned herself in the village ...
