All of business is more competitive than ever in todays business environment, and the mobile telephone industry is one of the most competitive of all. There is a reason for the crowded market, of course, particularly in China. In other areas of the world, phone producers and service providers are able to find at least some new customers, but most increase in market share results from usurping a measure of established customers away from competitors. In contrast, though the China market is crowded with competitors, most new customers still are first-time users. Further, despite double-digit growth, only a fraction of the Chinese people currently own and use cellular telephones. Current Market Coverage Cell phones still linger in the "luxury" category in China, but they are becoming more necessary for many Chinese citizens. Particularly in the more economically developed regions, "Some people have several phones, just to be fashionable" (Jolly, 2002). These users are not taking advantage of prices that traditionally are lower in China, either. In 2002, the average price of a phone was about USD249 and could go as high as USD777 (Jolly, 2002). Jolly (2002) also reports that there were an estimated 150 million cellular telephone subscribers in China. There is some disagreement surrounding how many of Chinas population already subscribe to cellular service, however. Fiducia Management Consultants reported in 2001 that there were approximately 200 million subscribers in China at that time (China Becomes Worlds Leading Mobile Phone Market, 2001), and that the industry was expected to grow between 13 and 20 percent annually at least until 2005, when the total number of subscribers is expected to reach 300 million ...
