Interdisciplinary health care teams have been around in one form or another since at least the early 20th century but they have become more popular and more formalized in recent years. This essay defines an interdisciplinary team and discusses the benefits of this model for the patient as well as for health care professionals. Two examples of the outcomes of such a team are provided. The composition of the team is discussed, including comments on Drinka's systems model. Center Movement emerged in the 1960s as a federal initiative (DCAHEC, n.d.). This was a medical-oriented team approach for the purpose of proving more effective "medical care" (DCAHEC, n.d.). By the end of the 20th century, there was a dramatic shift from a medical care model to a health care model (DCAHEC, n.d.). This concept expanded to include a variety of health care professionals and non-professionals (DCAHEC, n.d.). As the concept became more accepted, different names have been attached to it, such as multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and collaborative (DCAHEC, n.d.). At best having three different names is confusing but worse, they mean different things to different people (DCAHEC, n.d.). Drinka defined an interdisciplinary team as "a group of individuals with diverse training and backgrounds who work together as an identified unit or system" (George Washington University, n.d.). They work together in a collaborative mode to provide higher quality, more cost-effective health care for patients (George Washington University, n.d.). The changing structure of the health care system, the proliferation of managed care companies, and the escalating costs are all reasons for instituting interdisciplinary teams in the health care system (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, n.d.).
