From the simplest realities, such as a store being out a particular food item, to larger realities, such as the death of a loved one, our lives are constantly influenced and also directed perhaps, by various circumstances. Shakespeares Hamlet, Robert Louis Stevensons Dr. Jeckyll, and Larry McMurtrys Gus McCrae from "Dead Mans Walk" are stories which provide us with characters whose lives are clearly influenced by various circumstances. In the following paper we examine each character separately and then provide a brief discussion of the three combined. Hamlet In Hamlets situation he is caught in circumstances which involve the murder of his father. The circumstances which unfold present us with the following: "In the beginning of the play Hamlet is found in a desperate frame of mind with regard to three things: his fathers death, his own suicidal tendencies, and his mothers marriage to his uncle" (Ennis hamlet.html). He could have ignored any intuition he had, in regards to his fathers death, had it not been for the ghost of his father. The ghost of his father has come to tell Hamlet the truth of what happened, and to implore Hamlet to take matters into his own hands, as his father is unable. The ghost insists that Hamlet seek vengeance for the father. Hamlet goes through many different changes because of the realities he has been told, and because of the task set before him. In the beginning he is incredibly confused and then quickly becomes outraged, at the king who has killed his father and at his mother, who is partially responsible. In these respects Hamlet is influenced by the notion of vengeance, which is perfectly acceptable, if not required, during Hamlets time.
