took shelter under the awning at the bus stop, where a middle-aged, friendly-looking woman was already standing. She smiled and we began having the sort of conversation that occurs between strangers, We talked mainly about the weather and the bus schedule. The woman seemed to want to continue the conversation and explained that she liked hearing me speak because of my accent. "I just love the way you talk," she said in her thick American drawl, obviously, not realizing that her speech had an accent of its own. "Where are you from?" "India," I replied. Suddenly the womans manner changed completely and a look of deep concern came over her face. "Oh, Ive heard about India. So many poor." She clucked her tongue sympathetically, but also with a slight air of superiority that seemed to me to indicate that she felt that all Indians were starving peasants dressed in loin cloths. I said nothing, but opened a book I carried with me and pretended to become very involved with reading it. There was no purpose in trying to persuade this woman that her idea of India and Indians was based on a stereotype. Indians have been immigrating to the U.S. for decades. While initially, these immigrants may have taken service jobs in motels or restaurants, today, Indians are managing Fortune 500 companies, such as United Airlines and U.S. Airways (Spaeth, et al 22). They are also working in such positions as securities analysts and stock consultants. Rajat Gupta, who was born in Calcutta, is the head of a company that is a giant in this industry, McKinsey & Company (Spaeth, et al 22).
