While incestuous relationships can occur between adults, the more disturbing form of incest involves children that are being sexually molested by a relative. Although the literature makes a distinction between the motivations found in incestual cases of child molestation and nonincestual cases, the impacts of each can be catastrophic. These impacts include a variety of psychological manifestations, some of the most concerning of which are Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and associated eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Introduction Sexual improprieties come in a number of forms. One of the most misunderstood of these sexual improprieties is incest. By strict definition incest is the sexual relationship that occurs between two closely related individuals. Numerous cultures prohibit the marriage of individuals who are first cousins or closer in their familial relationships. The reasons for this prohibition are many and varied. Biologically the reasons for prohibiting the marriage of close relatives is to prevent inbreeding, or consanguinity. The reasoning behind such prohibitions revolve around the fact that the risks of inheriting genetically associated diseases or suffering from some sort of genetic disability is increased in the children which are produced by the marriages of close relationships.
