Imperialism is often associated with the empire building of European countries and the development of colonies, although these are influences, imperialism in the Middle East starts a long time before this. In looking at imperialism we first need to define what this is, in the broadest of senses it is the extension of influence and power of one nation over another for their own benefit by the development of a hegemony in the area or region. Some of the earliest recorded imperialism appears to be occurring around the Middle East. Overall in Egypt and Mesopotamia there is a desire to spread and expand, with their own form of imperialism, one good example is that of Assyria as an Imperial power, then the Persian Empire. One case of imperialism is recorded as taking place between 1650 - 1550 BCE (Before Common Era). This was the second intermediate period in Egypt that extended from the fourteenth to the seventeenth dynasties (Thornton, 2003). The time was one where there was increase social instability, and as such the country was weak. We ca assert there was imperialism here as the ruling of Egypt was by a series of non Egyptians, known as the Semitic Kings, named Hyksos, meaning princes of the foreign lands (Thornton, 2003). They had come down from the Northeast in horse drawn chariots and were Seth worshippers (Thornton, 2003). When Manetho, a priest who rules around 250 BCE, writes of this period in an historical context this is describe as a reign of terror. However, it is also worth noting that the history by Manetho is also the earliest discovered written history.
