the metaphor of an individuals approach to death. Their precise use of various techniques helped create the desired imagery, making imagery the most important outcome for the authors. Imagery was aided by allegory in both Keats and Brownings poems. Keats purpose in La Belle Dame sans Merci was to create the image of a soldier dying on the battlefield in analogous terms of the knights of prior centuries. As the soldier dies, "lily on the brow . . . fever dew . . . a fading rose," the knight imagines that a beautiful woman visits him and comforts him as he fights death (Keats 9-11). The woman is actually a fairy in the knights mind, a metaphor of the dream state. The knight is dreaming his last dream of life before death, and it is a dream about loving a woman. Keats creates this imagery by introducing the knights situation to the reader in the first three stanzas, then following his introduction with his imagery of the soldiers dream state. His meter and rhyme are in dialogue form, the form of folk ballads. The fourth line in every stanza is shortened by two metric beats to create a sense of temporary suspension before the story continues (Abrams, et al. 658). Browning also uses allegory to create his imagery. His story is concerned with an analogy to Greek gods and goddesses. However, the authors intent is to show madness rather than love.
