This testing of animals has led to major discoveries in disease vaccines and the identification of toxic chemicals that can compromise human health or result in death (Guither 73). Several renowned physicians have sung the praises of animal testing over the years including Dr. Adrian Morrison, behavioral neuroscience professor at the University of Pennsylvanias School of Veterinarian Medicine (a pioneer in animal testing) maintains, "Anybody who accepts the notion that disease is caused by a disturbance of anatomy or physiology is going to agree that animal research is necessary... A careful reading of the historical record reveals that its been absolutely indispensable for discovering and understanding basic biological processes (qtd. in James-Enger 104). The late esteemed heart surgeon Michael DeBakey concurred, and stated categorically, "Not one advancement in the care of patients -- advancements that you use and take for granted every day -- has been realized without the use of animal research" (qtd. in Guither 76). The benefits and advantages of animal testing in laboratories for medical research have been numerous. Animals are selected for certain testing types based upon their genetic proximity to humans suffering a particular disease. Many researchers maintain that animal DNA and human DNA are so similar, that test results can be applied to human diagnoses, treatments, and predicted outcomes. The animal testing success stories are numerous. For example, dog studies affirmed the relationship between high cholesterol and heart disease; chicken studies provided linkage between various viruses and cancer; and experimentation with the embryos of chicken, mice, and cattle, revealed that organ transplantation and acceptance of foreign tissue is acceptable to the human body (Guither 76-77).
