as other aspects such as written materials. Under the category of communication comes language. Language is something that can be written or verbal. Speech is a form of verbal language but speech may also be equated with simple sounds such as what emanates from an infant as he or she tries to communicate. While all of the concepts are inextricable, it is also true that one category supersedes the other and that while similar and inclusive, there are vast differences between the concepts. Another important thing that a student writing on this subject should note is that it is assumed that communication discussed is human, but there are human and non-human categories for each noted concept. For example, in terms of general communication, computers can communicate with one another and while many think of this not as communication but as something more equated with circuitry, it is hard to ignore the fact that something is going on. The debate regarding artificial intelligence is heated and while scientists argue the possibilities, science fiction writers create worlds where AI is a reality. Yet, in real life, there are numerous practical applications that are sometimes considered to be artificial intelligence (Allen, 2001). Some of these devices include reading machines made for the blind, speech-recognition devices, as well as computer programs that detect financial fraud (2001). Yet, non-human communication comes in the form of animal life as well. Dolphins for example are thought to communicate with a certain degree of intelligence. Newman (2001) observes an experiment where female dolphins are trained to push paddles to get food; during one experiment, a dolphin in a separate tank did not notice one of the female dolphins so she whistled and chirped to get his attention.
