Introduction Californias Mono Lake is a closed-basin lake (Perry and Vanderklein, 1996), meaning that water flows in but none flows out. The result is that the chemicals in the water - naturally-occurring and otherwise - concentrate in the lake as it loses water to evaporation, the only route of water loss available to it. Highly alkaline from intense concentrations of calcium carbonate and a variety of salts, the water of Mono Lake itself is valuable only for its environmental value in the immediate area. The city of Los Angeles long ago laid claim to the freshwater tributaries feeding Mono Lake, dropping the lakes water level more than 40 feet over 50 years (Frederick, 1983). Continuation of this trend would have resulted in intense concentration of precipitated chemicals and the release of others in the form of particulate matter as former bottom area became exposed to air. Recent human history has been kinder to Mono Lake. Until the 19th Century Prior to the arrival of European settlers, prospectors and pioneers, the area surrounding Mono Lake was part of the area traveled by the Kutzadikaa people, a group of about 200 foraging people seasonally following food supplies throughout the Mono basin. Their attraction to Mono Lake was the abundance of kutsavi, or alkali fly pupae. These pupae "were a significant source of food for the native people" (Mono Lake Natural History, 2005) of the area, who harvested the high-quality protein and fat source for use as food.
