In 2002, Lawrence, Massachusetts was dubbed a renewal community and would receive government assistance because of this designation ("HUD Announces," 2002). What will this label actually do for the people of Lawrence ? The following is reported in an article on this subject: " As a result of this Renewal Community designation, Lawrence will receive regulatory relief and tax breaks to help local businesses provide more jobs and promote community revitalization" ("HUD Announces," 2002). It is thought that through tax breaks, and other efforts to revitalize the community, that the unemployment issue will be resolved. This is certainly a possibility, but in order to understand whether or not this will become a reality in the years and decades to come, industry in the region must be examined. The economy of Lawrence is an urban center and 35% of its economy is aligned with manufacturing ("City of Lawrence," 2005). The city is well known, and has a strong, textile business ("City of Lawrence," 2005). Other aspects of the economy are entrenched in other types of businesses such as The Eagle Tribune newspaper, the Northern Essex Community College and Lawrence General Hospital ("City of Lawrence," 2005). While those are hardly businesses in the commonly used sense of the word, they are essentially places where money can be earned. Doctors and nurses can find work at the hospital and the newspaper as well as the college. People in Lawrence do have opportunities to work in the community, particularly with the tax incentive plan.
