Bibliography lists 5 sources. SA147Ren.rtf The literary movements that found its way to Harlem and also affected the Irish community were distinct in their own right but similar at the same time. Works which emanated during the Harlem Renaissance are often profound and insightful. Later on, it would be women such as Maya Angelou who would dominate discussions on black literature, but even during the renaissance, female voices were heard. However, prior to the Harlem Renaissance, there were less powerful literary works to come about by black authors and many of the works were written by an elite minority, but they were obscured. It could then be suggested that the Harlem Renaissance had changed life in Harlem, forever rendering it a trend-setting area, a fact reinforced by former President Bill Clintons fascination with it. Harlem of course was not the only place to undergo a Renaissance. In Europe, many artistic movements sprang up during the mid-1800s and much interesting art and writing came out of that period. It was a time after the Enlightenment. Yet, when the twentieth century neared, something new was stirring in Ireland. While the Irish Renaissance started a bit before the Harlem Renaissance which primarily affected the 1920s, they were both present at least in similar time periods. In other words, in the scheme of things, fifty or even one hundred years does not make much difference. The Harlem Renaissance came shortly after the one in Ireland.
