is one of the best survival skills that nature granted humans, and there is evidence that we use this skill even when were not aware of it. This is shown by the considerable body of learning research (Andrade, 1995) which has been conducted on people while under anesthesia. The main field of inquiry in this regards to how we learn is, of course, to determine the optimal conditions for learning. Research results, thus far, seem to indicate that there will be no simple answer to this question. My own experience toward learning leads me to speculate that learning can be roughly broken down into two basic types. The first type is where the task to be learned involves a physical skill which must first be understood cognitively, and then practiced on a physical level in order for the learned material to be put into use. Type 1 would encompass such things as learning to read and write, any sports activity, or playing a musical instrument. Each of these activities involves first understanding the principles involved and then training ones muscles to perform the task. Even reading which seems like a purely mental activity requires that the child learn to control his or her eyes well enough to scan a line of text from side to side, and the physical aspects of the other activities are obvious. After the movements associated with each activity have been repeated often enough, the skills involved seem to become part of the nervous system, almost reflexive, and require little thought. A good example of this is shown by the old saying that one never "forgets" how to ride a bicycle.
