Therefore, it is in the interests of businesses to be able to identify how and why did occur as well as assess cost effective strategies which may be utilised to reduce the unnecessary absences. A wealth of literature has looked at influences impact on employee behaviour, including decisions to take time off of work. The paper presented focuses on the concept of motivation and equity, and the way in which an employee may feel committed to an employer, trust the employer and feel that the employee is treating them fairly. The primary research undertaken with a sample of 120 respondents from a major UK retailer indicates that there is a strong linear relationship between the amount of days taken offering unnecessary absences and levels of dissatisfaction in terms of motivation, low levels of trust and the perception of unfairness. These results are highly aligned with relevant theory. The research also indicates there are a number of strategies that employees may adopt which may reduce the number of unnecessary absences. The strategies are based on human relations school of management, where the social needs of the employees as well as the financial needs are being met.
