The Jehovahs Witnesses happen to be a Christian group, but it is not mainstream. They use a Holy Bible but it is a different translation from what most people are used to. It is called New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures3. Some would equate it with a cult. There are many things that the culture is opposed to, inclusive of abortion, but what really disturbs many people is its refusal to use blood, even when someone needs a transfusion4. There have been reports of death due to their unusual beliefs. Of course, abortion is prohibited not just because blood or medical procedures are involved, but due to the obvious reasons. Like mainline Christians, there is the idea that ending life is wrong. Interestingly, Norma McCorvey who is also known as Roe in the infamous Roe v. Wade trial, is the product of a mixed marriage; her father is a Jehovahs Witness and her mother is a Roman Catholic5. What is interesting about the case is that her father supported her decision-whatever it was-while her mother was very angry with her6. Does this mean that the hold on the women of this group is weakening? Is there an abortion debate within the Jehovahs Witnesses organization? II. History The history of Jehovahs Witnesses, or at least the modern history, would begin around the 1870s when a bible study group began to get together in the United States in Alleghany, Pennsylvania7.
