the same time they mean almost nothing as many characters seem to take on names, create a social position, with great ease. But, there is still an obvious strength to names, self devised or otherwise. The culture itself demanded that names were used, regardless of their validity, in order to rise in society, or in order to be seen as legitimate in some way. While family names put a particular individual into a certain place in society, especially if they came from wealth and power, those with names they created appear to have just as much power, regardless of who they really are. The following paper examines the theme of honor and family names in Dumas novel. Honor and Family Names in The Count of Monte Cristo In first examining the power of honor and a family name it is informative and intriguing to understand something of Dumas life as it involved his own family name. One author notes that, "Alexandre Dumas was the son of one of Napoleons most decorated generals. His father, the illegitimate son of a French nobleman and a Negro seamstress, took his mothers name of Dumas, and rose through the ranks of the military through his bravery and leadership" (Faulkner). And, like his father, Alexandre apparently went on to experience a life of debauchery and promiscuity, again illustrating the natural man, not the man made by a name of power (Faulkner). But, at the same time, although he was an incredibly popular and prolific writer in his day, he "died a poor man, having squandered millions of francs on his reckless lifestyle," perhaps giving insight into family traditions, a name, and the power that would perhaps be related to that (Faulkner).
