Greek warrior named Achilles, the way that Achilles behaves in the Iliad says a great deal to the modern scholar about how the Greeks viewed warriors and warrior conduct during
wartime. Also, while the vast majority of the poem concerns battles and wartime strategy, there are also scenes that reveal the life going on inside of the beleaguered
city. These scenes dramatize the human suffering that is involved in fulfilling a warriors duty to the state. It is particularly these scenes that give modern readers the feeling
that they have opened a window to the distant past, because the emotional content of the poem shows that, while the world has changed, human nature remains the same.
As pointed out by Noble, et al (1994) in the Iliad, "Homer puts as much emphasis on brains as on brawn" (p. 69). A recurrent theme that runs through
this epic has to do with the ongoing struggle between reason and humane emotion. This is evidenced in a pivotal scene that occurs near the beginning of the poem. Agamemnon
and Achilles argue over who has the "rights" to one of the "spoils of war," which in this case is a person, a girl who has already been made Achilles
mistress (Noble, et al, p. 70). When it becomes evident that Agamemnon intends to take this girl, Achilles reacts with anger, pulls his sword and is about to slay
