to obtain suitable and permanent shelter. Yet, there is a sense that this new form of vagrancy, as opposed to the older style related to colonial America, is different (Barak, 1992). While different in terms of how the homeless are viewed and how they live, it seems that the causes of homelessness is probably different as well. One study suggests that the lack of affordable housing is the primary reason for the condition today (Grzeskowiak, 2005). It makes sense. An individual without access to affordable shelter will find that they are drifting from place to place. Some end up living on the streets. Others do not mind the shelters. Still others are fortunate to have friends or relatives that will allow them to stay in their homes temporarily. At the same time, without a place one can claim as his or her own, life is difficult. The concept of homelessness and advocacy is certainly new. What is it about homelessness that mandates advocacy? It seems that homelessness is something society wants to ignore. On one hand, there is the idea that if people cannot pull themselves up by their bootstraps and make a living, they do not deserve good housing. Affordable housing is not always available in certain expensive areas. Such individuals could move or rent a room in a private home or move in with relatives. There are reasonable solutions to the problem, but the reality is that some people do not have friends or family. They drift from street corner to bus station, hoping for a warm place to sleep.
