Alternative approaches to the treatment of disease are becoming more and more common in the treatment of disease. The term "alternative" refers to those alternative approaches to health care that fall outside the care provided by licensed medical doctors and the mainstream medical establishments within which they work. In the past this has included such alternative practices as massage, herbalism, and acupuncture as well as more esoteric approaches such as Mind-Body Healing. These approaches have been used to treat diseases as diverse as hypertension, migraine headaches, and Crohns Disease. Concentrating on those alternative approaches that have a proven track record in terms of affecting improved health and welfare, Complimentary Alternative Medicine seeks an integration of mainstream medical care and the so-called alternative approaches to care (AARP, 2005). American invest billions annually on alternative approaches to healthcare (Allen, 2005). The National Institutes of Health estimates that thirty-six percent of us employ some sort of alternative medicine other than vitamins and prayer (Allen, 2005). When those latter two categories are included among those approaches that are specifically utilized to improve health, the percentage of Americans relying on CAM jumps to sixty-two percent (Allen, 2005)! These statistics demonstrate that we have not moved that far beyond the traditional folk remedies that aided us through the early part of our countrys history.
