the city of Florence during the 14th and 15th centuries was a decadent and self-indulgent municipality. By understanding the attitude of that time period it will be easier to
comprehend the mayhem that was brought on during the time of Carnival. Florence of the 14th century had a limitation upon how much jewelry a woman could wear,
lest she be fined for being overindulgent. Married women were allowed to wear up to "two rings and a silver bell" (Rice University, 2002, PG) but any more than
that would leave them susceptible to being punished by having a fine levied against them. Not only did law govern such personal items but there were also rules as
to how many guests one could have at a private dinner party, as well as how many courses could be served during the meal. The number of guests allowed
to attend certain weddings and funerals was also closely regulated. Why and for how long such bizarre laws were in effect seems to be lost in the annals of
history (Rice University 2002). There were legal brothels in Florence during the Renaissance, and violence was a way of life. If one was in danger of being punished for
lawlessness, it was easy enough to leave town until the threat of being punished blew over. There was a major discrepancy between the wealthy and poor classes of people
