This fast growing field, which has led to the development of positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT-CT) systems began with the early development of reactors and accelerators by physicists (Cantone and Hoeschen, 2011). Though the history of nuclear technologies often refers to back to the development of the x-ray, the creation of radiouclides in the 1940s and their medical use is generally perceived as the beginning of the era of nuclear medicine. The development of nuclear medicine has taken off in recent decades, with broad reaching implications for the treatment of a range of conditions, including cancer.
