called to many young people in many ways. For example, it has its own style of clothing, its own drink (Mountain Dew), and its own language as well, or so
it seems. White boys are emulating African Americans from the inner city. Videos create a world that is pure fantasy, but not unreal for the youth of America. It is
a fad, a trend in music and style, that has essentially engulfed many different aspects of the mass media. It is so infiltrating, in fact, that adults who are white
working in suburbia can be heard to say phrases and words made popular in the hip-hop culture. "When hip-hop music first hit the streets of New York City in
the late-70s, it was joyful party noise, a much-needed means of self-expression for ghetto kids who didnt have many options. It quickly became an underground form of communication, an outlet
for disenfranchised blacks to express anger at society, and, through careers in music, a way out" (Margolis, 2000). But, it is also a fad that has infiltrated the entire society
