Some form of heterologous gene expression is possible at every level of organism complexity. Though genes are hardly "interchangeable" between organisms, they nonetheless can be introduced to new hosts via some form of vector that does not itself take part in the assimilation of the gene segment that has been introduced. Already useful in plant research aimed toward increasing disease resistance, the same overall track is being followed in mammalian cell research as well. Bibliography lists 9 sources.
