Those who adhere to treatment protocol are better able to assimilate into the daily demands of living in a civilized society, however, they represent only a percentage of those who those who have yet to be diagnosed or those who are under a doctors care but whose nonadherence to treatment protocol only perpetuates their illness. One of the most visible examples of these two populations is found within the large number of homeless, a problem that impacts many levels of society such as retailers whose profits are at risk when people live in their doorways to law enforcement whose responsibility to control the problem often interferes with other more critical police work. Healthcare is no less a social problem inasmuch as the very nature of it is to provide immediate and/or sustained medical treatment to those who need it. While the theory is quite straight forward, the application has certainly proven to be anything but a simple objective. Hospitals are just as implicated in the systems breakdown as any other component. A major area of concern for hospital executives is the fact that as managed care contracts increase, hospital marketing orientation decreases. Managed care unfortunately seems to force hospitals to concentrate on cost control more than the customer satisfaction and improved business results that occur from positive marketing orientation. People have different ideological perspectives pertaining to the problem. For example, the American mindset toward mental illness has historically been a conservative attitude of disdain and weakness; those who suffer from these conditions have long been considered undesirable fringe of society and best kept ...
