philosophies that have been advanced to explain with regard to the influence of cause-and-effect in human affairs; they include hard determinism, soft determinism and libertarianism, among others (. My thesis is simple: I believe that examining the tenets of two of these philosophies will enable me to decide which one I find more persuasive. In order to examine the positions, the essay is structured very simply: in the body Ill state the arguments in favor of hard determinism, touch on soft determinism briefly and then state the arguments in favor of libertarianism; then determine which philosophy I find more compelling and why. A brief conclusion follows the discussion. Discussion "Hard determinism" is the philosophical position that says no action is free if it "must occur," and since every action must occur because of antecedent events, no action is free (Cahn, 1971). (This exercise is set up in the form of a classic syllogism, with two true premises leading to a true conclusion. If any one of the three elements is untrue, the entire structure fails.) Here, Premise 1 is that "no action is free if it must occur"; Premise 2 is that for every event there are antecedent conditions that insure it will occur; which leads to the Conclusion: "no action is free" (Cahn, 1971, 39). Hard determinism argues that these two premises are true, leading to a true conclusion. Soft determinism argues that Premise #1 is false; that is, there are some actions that must occur but are free nevertheless.
