Through his journey which focuses on his need for revenge we watch him change, coming to a more righteous approach to avenging his fathers death. This approach does not mean he spares his fathers killer, it merely means that his personal approach to seeking vengeance changes. In the following paper we examine the words "revenge" and "vengeance" as they progress through the play, arguing that the words and their placement illustrate how Hamlet changes. Quote 1 Our first introduction into the world of vengeance comes when Hamlet encounters the Ghost. The Ghost of his father says, "Pity me not, but lend thy serious hearing/ To what I shall unfold" (I, v). And, in this short examination of this story we shall first witness a great many uses of the words under consideration. It should be noted that in this excess of usage we find the power behind the plot which is "Hamlet." Through presenting us with numerous uses of the words we are left with no questions about the theme of the story. Hamlet instructs the Ghost to speak and the Ghost tells Hamlet that "So art thou to revenge, when thou shalt hear" (I, v). Hamlet is confused and surprised, and he then learns that the Ghost is his fathers and his fathers Ghost informs him that horrible things have taken place and he has endured great suffering. He instructs Hamlet to "Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" (I, v). Hamlet is surprised once more, uttering, "Murder!" (I, v). His fathers Ghost tells him it was murder "most foul" and Hamlet replies, "Haste me to knowt, that I, with wings as swift/ As meditation or the thoughts of ...
