done to his father. It can be said, then, that the mousetrap that he set for Claudius worked only too well, much as a master chess player may strategize his
final moves. Once set in its course of action, the plot, just as in the game of chess, compounds so that there is really only one course of action left
for Hamlet to choose. And so, the tragedy of Hamlet is complete. In chess the basic goal is to checkmate the opponents King. Checkmate happens only when the King has
been attacked and the King cannot escape capture. This, in effect, happens in several instances within the play, Hamlet. Hamlets father, who has been killed as the play opens, has
been checkmated, so to speak. In his place, then, his own brother has stepped up to the throne and married Gertrude, Hamlets mother. Claudius, then, becomes Hamlets opponent. The
other instance of a checkmate, is of course, at the end of the play when Hamlet has backed Claudius into a corner, forced him to confess, and delivers the death
blow. However, the play is most like a chess game in the strategizing which goes on prior to this final scene. In Scene one, act 3, Hamlet gives his famous
soliloquy, to be or not to be. Even as early as this, there is a good argument for Hamlets strategy unfolding. His motivation for giving this speech is an attempt
to solve a potentially external problem, especially since Polonius and Claudius are within earshot of the speech. However, the conversation which Hamlet has may very well concern his feelings for
Ophelia and what he should do as concerns her safety and more importantly, what his decision to embark upon his plan will mean to their relationship. To grunt and sweat
