issues in the region was clearly determined by the political history and the complexity of societal relationships that were present during the 19th and 20th centuries in that area of the world. When considering the significance of Hoetinks work, it is also imperative to understand the complexity of racial issues that prevailed through out the region. Racial determinants were not only the product of different ethnic lines, but represented by significant differences in the religious, social and economic status of the people. These indicators not only determined the interactions between different races, but also demonstrated the complexity of societal situations. These considerations included: the issue of slavery and the development of societal concerns regarding this institution, the division along racial lines based in the Spanish and French influences, and the diversity of cultures. Hoetink was not the first to look at race issues in the Caribbean or determine the impacts of racial differences on the islands of that region, but his work is both compelling and promotes a greater understanding of the issues relative to these inherent disparities. There are significant influences that have created the long-standing divisions among the races, and these also are demonstrated through different class systems and differences in religion. Although Hoetink takes a specific look at the sociology of the area, it would be impossible to consider this without also determining the impacts of religion and class systems on the people. For example, the Dominican Republic has been a prime example of the complex nature of the sociological processes in Central America, and more specifically the Caribbean.
