These works are intended to have readers question their own values, priorities, and conceptions of gender, and in this quest Maupassant achieves brilliance. The Necklace is a story about a woman and her greed, and how that greed ends up destroying her life. Matilda is married to an average man, who makes an average income and provides an average life. She longs to be wealthy and to have the finer things in life, to the point that she obsesses about it continuously. Whatever joy and happiness she could extricate from her life is impossible since she has made herself miserable from her longing for wealth and position in society. It happens that she and her husband get invited to a very posh affair, and being thrilled by at the prospect of mingling with the "right" people, Matilda ends up borrowing a very fine, very large diamond necklace from a friend of hers. She wears the necklace to the party and for one evening life is all that she dreamed. She feels she is for a moment the woman she was meant to be - mixing with society people and being decorated with fine jewelry. However, she ends up losing the necklace and is unable to find it. Unable to tell her friend the truth because of her pride, she and her husband cash in anything and everything of value that they have, and risk their reputation by signing for credit they dont even know if they can repay.
