The beginning rudiments of mathematics began practically at the beginning of mans reign on the earth. The first individuals that recognized one group
of objects they collected had more items in it than the other was beginning to conceptualize counting. The earliest record we have of mans use of mathematics comes in
the archaeological record. The oldest component of that record, distinct carved notches on a baboons fibula, was found in Swaziland and dates to 35,000 B.C. (Mankiewicz, 2004). As hard
as it is to fathom, primitive man was in fact aware of the importance of numbers. Perhaps the notches related to time that had elapsed in any particular occasion
or perhaps they related to the number of wild game a hunter had taken. It might even be feasible that they related to the number of items and individual
had manufactured for trade or even the number of enemies he had killed in battle. Whatever the precise thing or event they represented in that hazy chapter of mans
early history, one thing is clear. That is that ancient man was in fact capable not only of conceptualizing numbers but of recording them in the equivalent of our
