In Carolly Ericksons work we are given a very broad look at the man, a very human look, as it involves many different aspects, although the primary aspects do involve his wives. The following paper reviews Carolly Ericksons "Great Harry." Great Harry Prior to discussing the book, we note that Carolly Erickson has written several historical books about legendary figures involving the Tudors and Stuarts. Her work delves into many personal aspects of the lives of infamous figures, and presents the reader with books that seem more than historical as they almost read like fiction. Her works are apparently respected and thoroughly enjoyed by laymen and scholars alike. In her book "Great Harry" we are first given a look at the boy who would become the legendary King Henry VIII. Most people do not stop to imagine that Henry VIII was ever a boy, or that he, like many people, was clearly a product of his environment and upbringing. Erickson tells us that "the little prince....was a chunky, round-faced child whose blond hair was bobbed to the ears and combed into long bangs across his forehead" (Erickson 21). He was the son of a King and he was a boy who was constantly raised in a tense environment: "the Kings insecurity overshadowed the lives of his children, and Prince Henry had never known a time of calm" (Erickson 22). Erickson presents us with the youthful years of this boy, suggesting objectively it seems, how such a tense and unstable environment would clearly lead Henry to become a king who would also be unsure and somewhat unstable.
