Globalization across Mexicos borders is related, as might be expected, to the countrys close proximity to the U.S. Indeed, globalization has been at work across those borders for much of the twentieth century. With the introduction of the North American Free Trade Agreement, however, globalization became an even more prevalent factor in Mexican life. Initiated on January 1, 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is the worlds largest contemporary free trade area both in terms of territory and in terms of gross national product (Pastor, 2006). An agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, NAFTA facilitates trade across the borders of the member countries. NAFTA has had a significant impact on the passage of industrial and agricultural products across the borders but it also has a significant impact on less tangible aspects of Mexican life such as ideology. Not only are people becoming exposed to more than one language, they are interacting in social institutions such as churches and schools on a more regular basis. Their value systems are being changed gradually but surely by this interaction. Not only are they becoming acclimatized to U.S. material culture they are becoming acclimatized to our music and our media. The are noting male and female interaction, the interactiosn between the affluent and the less affluent elements of U.S. society and they are beginning to change their own interactions both in the U.S. and back in Mexico.
