managers grew accustomed during the last few decades to offering incentives and an environment of camaraderie that tends to stimulate men but not women. For example, in one case that I read, a companys sales management team was accustomed to bringing its reps out to bars after work for informal sales meetings or celebrating their birthdays and other notable family occasions in the office. As women began to fill that companys sales positions, they were largely turned off by the idea of involving their personal lives in the workplace. Women were generally uncomfortable "going out for a few drinks" with the men after work and many even strongly objected to birthday celebrations in the office since they had a tendency to let everyone know the womans true age. (Business Horizons, Mar/Apr 1993 -6). For older managers, strategies and administrative tactics such as the ones described are common and well-instilled in their habits. Therefore, change arrives with great difficulty. Some managers claim that it is easier to give up and quit than it is to change their motivational tactics and the work environment for the needs of women. Still many managers are making great strives to accommodate the new women arriving in their workplaces. Many corporations have elected to hire female outside contractors who specialize in training and seminars for male managers who need to learn ways to successfully adjust their environment to provide equal comfort for men and women.
