Geotechnical engineers work in a diversity of settings and circumstances. Because they are charged with making recommendations for most developmental activities they are integrated in society and in the improvement of society. Geotechnical engineers are involved in building construction, road development, agricultural practices, the location and utilization of underground resources, and a variety of other activities that are becoming a more and more emphasized aspect of our contemporary society. Among the more interesting of these applications is their work in protecting and/or reclaiming lands that have or have the potential to be affected by development. Geotechnical engineering is, of course, concerned with the science of geology, with the study of rocks and soils. Because geological processes are both very old and still occurring the knowledge that is required of a geological engineer is quite evolutionary in nature. Our understanding of geotechnical engineering today is quite difference than our understanding of geotechnical engineering two thousand years ago when the world was still believed to be flat as opposed to spherical! Although firmly rooted in geology, the study and practice of geotechnical engineering also requires the understanding of a number of other fields. Geology, for example, is the function not just of geological processes but also the function of biological processes. Furthermore, the geological structure of a particular area can determine such aspects of that area as its ecological diversity. This becomes particularly important when we look at geotechnical engineering from a reclamation perspective, a preservation perspective, and in some instances at least even from a development perspective. The goal ...
