healthy populations. This is true despite the fact that, although the precise means through which life came to be is highly controversial, the genetic code of most all of lifes organisms are structured around just a few basic components. As might be expected, numerous mechanisms exist in nature to insure continued genetic diversity. These include mutations and sexual reproduction and even such aspects of the natural behavior of various species as migration and population size. As has been noted, the precise means through which life came about is highly controversial. There are three competing theories regarding the origin of life on earth. The Extraterrestrial Theory on the origin of life purports that life resulted when a series of extraterrestrial events resulted in the proper combination of substances and ultimately life. This theory purports that even before life on earth, even before the earth, even before the universe, there was dust, gas and the vast reaches of space. This mass of dust and gas which was floating around space was slowly pulsating, in rhythm perhaps to the forces of a supernova or some other space phenomena. According to one theory, the universe and its components were formed in a single cataclysmic explosion between ten and twenty million years ago. This explanation is commonly referred to as the "Big Bang". This theory has become the central point of not only cosmogony, but also of astronomy and the current theories of the basic structure of matter and energy as well. In addition to the Big Bang theory, however, there is also the theory referred to as the "Steady State" model which holds that the universe has neither a ...
