Gene therapy to correct genetic defects holds tremendous promise for the future. The general public seems to be divided into two basic camps on the issue of gene therapy: those that believe such accomplishments are impossible and those that consider such medical interventions immoral and taboo. Many seem to believe that gene therapy exists just in the imaginations of the worlds scientists. Although gene therapy is still in the fledgling state it is far from science fiction! It is not only doable, it is sure to become a widely accepted and desirable medical intervention. Discussion The need for gene therapy is hardly debatable. A multitude of afflictions are believed to be caused by genetic defects. Everything from alcoholism to criminal behavior is believed to be linked to one degree or another to genetic defects. Consider the potential societal benefit if just one of these genetic defects could be corrected through gene therapy. The literature suggests that this could indeed be the case. In regard to alcoholism, for example, researchers at the Oregon Health Sciences University and the Portland Veterans Affairs worked with mice to successfully identify a correlation between the D2 dopamine receptor gene and alcohol consumption (Oregon Live, 2005). This gene is known to produce pleasure and has now been found to increase a mouses preference for alcohol (Oregon Live, 2005). It is believed that the receptor is involved in some manner with the activation of some sort of reward system which rewards alcohol consumption (Oregon Live, 2005).
