have changed considerably over time. This is true in general but it is especially true in terms of gender depictions in film. The change has not been a
gradual upward change in terms of the quality of depictions, however. Instead that change has been characterized by various peaks and valleys. This is the case for depictions
of male and female Asiatics alike. A review of film over time reveals that some things are constant but others it seems are constantly evolving in terms of Asiatic
gender depictions. Depictions of Asiatics begin in the earliest days of film. In the U.S., film depictions of the pre-World War II
Asian American experience was predicated on the fact that Asian Americans had neither reproduced their traditional identities and cultures in this new land nor completely assimilated into mainstream culture.
Film depictions showed male and female Asian Americans as distinctly isolated from mainstream culture, only interacting in that culture as need demanded. They were depicted as speaking little
or no English and as sticking out in terms of being different due to their distinctive racial features, accent, and even religion.
Despite the definite focus of film on the differences of Asian Americans, Asian Americans in the years preceding World War II were depicted more in a positive light than
