Despite two or more decades of people saying they do not want their children to behave and think in stereotypical ways, research consistently concludes that parents treat their children differently based on the child's gender. Since initial gender roles are assumed during infancy and young childhood, this paper looks at the research involving play and toy selection and how these are developed in the child. subject of debates for many years with no definitive conclusion reached. There are strong arguments supporting socialization. Specific areas that have been studied include gender preferences for sex-typed toys, gender
differences in play patterns, selection of same-sex playmates and social dominance. The literature suggests that children engage in sex-stereotypical behavior from a very early age. When attempting to determine whether
or not a child exhibits sex-stereotypical behaviors, researchers typically observe them during play. Researchers have also observed parental interaction as well as the home environment in an attempt to determine
how children develop behaviorally in terms of gender differences. By the time a child is 18 months old, gender differences are apparent in the toys the child selects and in
their approach to play. Boys are usually noisier and typically spend more time playing with blocks, cars, trucks, guns or other weapon-type toys while girls are quieter and tend to
spend more time playing with soft toys, dolls, art materials, and dressing up toys. Some researchers argue that these are learned behaviors (Neppl and Murray, 1997). In fact, it is
through play that young children develop their perception of gender roles and what it means to be a boy or a girl. Infants begin playing within the first month of
birth through their interactions with their parents. They learn how to engage in eye contact, how to take turns, how to go up and down with the flow of conversation.
Parent-infant play is extremely important because through it, parents provide the infant with information regarding appropriate and expected behaviors (Smith, 1995). Mothers and fathers play differently with their infants
