How human beings relate to one another depends greatly upon the particular situation: Family members exhibit different behavior when they are together from that of a married couple; mere acquaintances do not establish the same bonds as do those who have been lifetime friends. The variables that determine how and to what extent people interact speak directly to the nature of their respective relationships and the extent to which they are meant to carry them forward. Characteristic of humanitys constant quest for the concept of meaning, the journey of understanding has come to represent myriad things to myriad people, ultimately rendering any universal explanation virtually impossible. The problem with meaning as it applies to Emily and her confused feelings is attempting to successfully pinpoint a single yet comprehensive connotation to its concept; however, this is difficult to achieve as long as any two individuals harbor decidedly different interpretations of a single notion. When one considers the word relationship, the first thing that often comes to mind is romantic love as in marriage. However, as Emily has illustrated, there exist a vast array of relationships that do not involve romantic love at all, but rather incorporate different kind of emotions such as affection, respect and appreciation. She is very capable of carrying on many relationships that are virtually void of any emotional involvement, based instead upon a foundation of mutual respect associated only with their mutual interest.
